Is there anything more durable than cast iron? I personally have a cast iron pan that's over 100 years old. Older pieces can go for hundreds of dollars, but there's no need to pay that much these days. If you look for an antique pan, get one with a machined smooth cook surface. It will be easier to season and become non-stick.

Newer cast iron pans work quite well, are just as durable and are pre-seasoned. They'll arrive from the store already non-stick and ready to go.
